What is valerian (Valeriana officinalis)?
Valerian is a plant whose root has been used for centuries. The European Medicines Agency recognises the use of valerian root to relieve mild nervous tension and difficulty sleeping. It is taken as an infusion, capsules, tablets or liquid extract, alone or combined with passionflower, lemon balm or California poppy.
How to choose it
As an infusion it has a strong smell; many people prefer capsules or tablets of extract. Check the amount of extract per dose.
