What is lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)?
Lavender is an aromatic shrub from the Mediterranean. Its dried flower is traditionally taken as an infusion, and its essential oil is one of the most widely used in aromatherapy, in cosmetics and for scenting the home. The European Medicines Agency recognises the traditional use of lavender oil to relieve mild stress and help with rest.
How to choose it
If you are looking for essential oil, choose one that states the botanical name (Lavandula angustifolia or L. officinalis) and is 100 % pure; lavandin (L. hybrida) smells similar but is a different plant. For the bath or a massage, it is better to choose an oil or a cream that already contains it diluted.
